YHA Archive News May 2017

May was an exciting and productive month for John Martin, YHA’s honorary archivist.

John writes about YHA’s archive and its latest acquisitions and boxes and boxes of old records from the Lake District in this report. He came back from a recent trip to the Lake District laden with old files of fascinating material and records from the region. Once all this material is recorded and catalogued it will make its way to YHA’s public archive at the Cadbury Research Library at the University of Birmingham – click on the link here YHA Archive News May 2017

  1. My comment is really a question about a youth hostel called ‘Kingshill’. I stayed there in September 1948, but I cannot locate it on your excellent archive list. Have you any knowledge of it. My records show that I was at Ravenstor on the previous nigh and Kings Cliffe on the following night, so it must be somewhere between those two hostels. If you could help me I would be most grateful.

    1. Hi Hugh. Great to hear from you. It looks like your Kingshill hostel was the one at Brassington in Derbyshire, open from 1942 – 1951. Its address was Kingshill, Brassington, though it seems to have been called Brassington and is listed that way in the historical listing of hostels. I’ll try to find out more but meanwhile hope this helps. Duncan
