Yorks (West Riding)

Youth Hostel Profiles:

Historic county of Yorkshire (West Riding)

Malham Youth Hostel

These completed files are of hostels in the historic West Riding of Yorkshire.

This is a large area of great contrasts, from the industrial heartlands of Leeds, Bradford and Sheffield (each had a considerable active YHA membership), via the rugged moorland surrounding those cities (for example Haworth hostel), to most of the Yorkshire Dales (Malham). Hostels extended from Sedbergh, now in Cumbria, to the fringes of the Peak District around Sheffield in the south.

Note that York was historically in the West Riding.

The West Riding of Yorkshire was represented regionally by YHA’s regions of West Riding (for example Kirkby Malzeard hostel), North Midlands (Fulshaw) and even Manchester (Gisburn) up to 1965, and Yorkshire region, Lakes region and Peak region 1965-86.
