Youth Hostel Profiles:

Historic counties of Northumberland and Durham

The Sill

These completed files are of hostels grouped into the historic counties of Northumberland and Durham.

YHA came early to Northumberland and County Durham, especially through the insight and initiative of Professor GM Trevelyan and his brother Sir Charles Trevelyan.

The Northumberland and Tyneside region (1931-65) covered all of Northumberland and the northern part of County Durham. The southern part came under a different group, the enthusiastic but financially challenged Wear, Tees and Eskdale, which also had hostels in Northern Yorkshire.

The two regions merged in 1965 to become Border and Dales. The Yorkshire hostels of WTE stayed with Border and Dales, oddly, rather than move into the newly created Yorkshire Region. These ex-B&D hostels (such as Whitby and Saltburn) are listed under Yorkshire (North Riding).
