Youth Hostel Profiles:
Historic county of Middlesex (including the ceremonial City of London).
Note that this section also includes the northern tip of historic Surrey, so as to include YHA London Thameside, but that YHA Lee Valley, being outside the M25, is to be found under Hertfordshire (in the Central and Eastern Section of profiles).
These completed files are for what might be termed Metropolitan London or, in modern terms, within the M25.
The hostels in these profiles were represented regionally by a changing and complex system of special management sometimes under the title London Hostels Management Board. YHA’s pre-1965 London Region and 1965-86 joint Eastern and Southern Regions dealt instead with hostels on the periphery of the capital. More recent openings and developments in London have been under the aegis of the National YHA.
For a period of about 40 years after the war YHA operated temporary summer overflow hostels to augment regular YHA accommodation; a profile of these special arrangements is included here.
The profiles are strictly for personal study only and are the copyright of John Martin, YHA’s volunteer archivist. They must not be republished, transmitted or distributed.
