YHA York. Three buildings, Rowntrees and a hut from an aerodrome

As early as 1934 YHA had determined to open youth hostels in historic cities. A grant was given to the fledgling York, Scarborough and Hull Regional Group for a hostel in York.
A large brick-built double- fronted and bayed town house, Trenfield, was selected on Holgate Road and it duly opened on 23rd March, 1934, with an official ceremony held the next day.
YHA were tenants on a rather insecure month-by-month basis….
