A hostel a week – Malham

Purpose-built history in Yorkshire

In 1937 YHA West Riding Region drew up plans and appeals for a model hostel at Malham, to cost about £3,500.

The facility opened in July 1938 and was the first purpose-built hostel in Yorkshire, later examples following in Helmsley and Hawes. It was constructed on the site of the old Malham Sheep Fair.

The hostel was designed and built by a local architect, John Dower, who lived nearby in Kirkby Malham. A style was adopted to resemble the local farmsteads though subsequent extensions and alterations relaxed those criteria.
