There had been several attempts to open a youth hostel in Alnwick. As early as 1935 the YHA’s Rucksack Magazine announced that there had been an unsuccessful attempt to open a hostel in the town.

The proposition was worked on, but stumbled on the fact that accommodation could be provided for one sex only.
Seven years later, the local Northumberland and Tyneside Region was considering prospects for youth hostel properties whenever the war might finish.
It had been contemplating if any of the Ministry of Agriculture’s redundant premises might be used in peace-time, and suggested in its 1942 annual report that Land Army barracks would make fine hostels.
